A mysterious young man, he was born and raised in the town of Nibelhiem, leaving to midgar at a young age to become a SOLDIER 1st Class like his idol, Sephiroth. He never made it to 1st Class, of even SOLDIER, instead becoming a rookie in the military.
During one of his assingments he was paired with Zack and Sephiroth on a trip to inspect the Nibelhiem reactors. Ashamed of his failure his kept his hood on to hide his face from the inhabitants of his home town.
Went Sephiroth went berserk after finding he was the result of an experiment in the Jenova Project, he picked up the sword of the defeated Zack and ran Sephiroth through. Later helping Tifa, who had confronted Sephiroth and lost, to a safe place, saying he had kept his promise.

A young and optimistic woman, Tifa is known for her fierce resolve and strength.
Born in the Town of Nibelhiem, she later moved to midgar, setting up a tavern and joining the rebel group AVALANCHE. She has a deep resentment for Shin-Ra, SOLDIER, and Sephiroth after her town was burned down and her father killed 5 years earlier when Sephiroth went berserk, She herself was greviously wounded and would have died if not for the actions of her martial arts teacher Zangan.
She plays an important roll as clouds support, and though she harbors feelings for him she would never tell them.
She accompanies him througout his travels, helping him regain his sense of self, and helping him throw off the guilt of failing to save Aerith. She fought the incarnation of Sephiroths strength Loz, but was beaten.

A young spirited woman, Aerith is the last true Ancient, a race of beings who lived years ago and talked with the planet.
She is the daughter of Ifalna(the last full blooded ancient) and Professer Gast, formerly a Shin-Ra scientist who fell in love with Ifalna while talking with her.
When she was only 20 days old Professer Hojo had Gast shot and killed, and her and her mother taken back to Shin-Ra to be used in research.
Years later Ifalna escaped, but was wounded in the process and died, handing over her young child to Elmyra Gainsborough, who raised her as her own. During this time she was visted by The turks who tried to "persued" her to come back to Shin-Ra.

Formly of the town of Coral, he moved to midgar shortly after his town was burned to the ground by Shin-Ra troups who believed that the town had sabatoged the mako reactor stationed there, causing it to explode.
The resulting fire killed his wife and many of the towns folk, who blamed him for the incident, as well as himself.
Returning from buissness to Coral before the fire, he and his friend Dyne were attacked by Shin-Ra troups led by Scarlet, the result of the battle cost both men one of their upper arms, and seemingly Dyne his life.
The deep hatred born from this caused him to join the rebel group AVALANCHE, eventually becoming it's leader.
He is most notable by his brash attitude and headstrong ideas.

A hot-blooded, headstrong man, Cid used to be a pilot for Shin-Ra with dreams of going into space. Using a home made spear as a weapon, he acts tough, but deep down has a kinder side.
After the space exploration project was canceled with the failure of the launch, in which his wife Sheera was still in the engine room checking things out, saying she didn't care if she died if she could finish and make the launch a success and help him realize his dreams.
In the end he aborted the launch, as has felt a sort of resentment towards her since.
When Rufus visited he thought it could be the start of the space program again, but in actuality the president had come to use his plane, the tiny Bronco.

A calm, quiet beast, Red XIII, Also known as Nanaki surprises most with his ability to talk. Notable traits are his keen intelligence, a despite his age(believed to be at around 50) he is still quite young in his natural life span, being around the age of a teenager.
Not much is known about his early time, only that he harbors a deep hatred for his father whom he believes is a coward who deserted their tribe in a time of need.
He was discovered in Shin-Ra Labratory after Hojo tried to get him an Aerith to mate "Preserivng" both species. Upon being free'd he apologized to Aerith, saying he was acting to throw of Hojo and that he prefered his own species. He travled with Cloud and comapny to the fight with Sephiroth, and reappeared later to aid in the fight with Bahamut Sin.

Cait Sith is the alternate alies of Reeve, the Head of Urban Development in Shin-Ra.
He controls Cait Sith by remote control from Shin-Ra headquaters to track Cloud and his Gang.
He meets them at the gold saucers, befrinding them and, rather forcibly, joining them.
He later is found out to be a traitor when he betrays them by giving them the keystone, the key to the Temple of the Ancients, and through blackmail stays with them. At the temple he sacrifices his body to get the black materia, with the words, "Please dont forget me, even if another cait sith comes along".
He stays up until the fight with Sephiroth, returning in the battle with Bahamut Sin.

A former Ex-Turk, Vincent meets the party when they discover him in an underground basement, during his 30 year stay as "punishment for his sins".
He rejects them at first but soon joins after he learns of Sephiroth and Shin-ra, only for the chance of an encounter with Hojo, a man whom he harbors hatred for.
He is notably quiet and anti-social, providing a stark difference to the rest of the gang, especially the bright and energetic Yuffie.
He fights alongside the party untill the fight with Sephiroth, afterwhich he travels the world alone. He eventually reappears, first saving Tseng and Elena from their torture at the hands of the SHM. Then rescuing cloud from an ill fated battle against them. he provides the party with a wealth of information about Geostigma, and even Kadaj and his gang. He later participaits in the battle against Bahamut Sin.

The child of Hojo and Lucrecia, he was an experiment at birth, injected with Jenova cells before he was born to study their effects. With the added cells he grew up abnormally strong, eventually joining SOLDIER and climing the ranks to SOLDIER 1st Class.
Things went well untill he, along with Zack and two mps(one of which was Cloud), were assigned to inspect the Nibelhiem reactor.
As he was expecting it he looked inside the mako tanks, discovering a gruesume secret. That Hojo had placed humans inside the tanks which mutated due to the high density mako exposure. This shock threw Sephiroth, making him question himself "Was I made this way too..? I had always felt I was different, special even since I was a child.. But not like this."
